2 Jews stabbed in London, condition critical
Bangla Press Desk: Two Jewish men were seriously injured in a stabbing attack in Golders Green, north London, UK. A man ran down a busy street with a knife and attempted to attack Jewish worshippers, local Jewish security agency Shamarim said on Wednesday afternoon. The agency said it responded immediately and arrested the suspect. Police later arrived and arrested the man using an electric gun or ‘Taser’. London Mayor Sadiq Khan confirmed the arrest.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the attack in the British parliament as ‘deeply worrying’. He said, ‘The investigation is ongoing. We have to be determined to crack down on this kind of crime. We have seen a lot of this kind of crime recently.’
Local resident Gedal Weinberg said the bloody incident happened right outside his house. He said one of the stabbings took place in front of a shop on Golders Green Road and the other in front of a synagogue (Jewish house of worship) on a nearby road. The area is currently cordoned off by police and armed police have been deployed.
BBC News confirmed that the two people injured in the attack are Jewish and are currently in a critical condition. They are being treated by a Jewish emergency service called ‘Hatzolah’. It is worth noting that several ambulances of the same company were destroyed in arson attacks in the area last month.
Sarah Sackman, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, called the incident “intolerable”. She said, “An attack on British Jews is an attack on Britain itself”. She said she was holding an emergency meeting with the Home Secretary regarding the situation.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was in constant contact with the Metropolitan Police and that police patrols had been increased in Jewish areas.
A series of hate attacks targeting the Jewish community in London over the past month have raised deep concerns among expatriates and locals.
