amaat to sue govt unless July Charter made legally binding
Bangla Press Desk: Jamaat-e-Islami has warned the party would file a lawsuit seeking compensation from the interim government if the state reform pledges by different political parties are not made legally binding. In the lawsuit, the National Consensus Commission will also be made a defender, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher told reporters at the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday. Political parties are continuing talks with the state-appointed National Consensus Commission on drafting the “July Charter,” which would be a collection of pledges for executing state reforms under the upcoming elected government. BNP, currently the biggest political party, and like-minded parties have said there is no scope to give legal guarantees to the Charter, and only written pledges should be enough.
Taher countered the claim saying the scope for legal measures exist. If the government will not make the charter legally binding, Jamaat won’t sign on it, he said. Consequently, Jamaat will file a lawsuit for wasting its considerable time and efforts in the name of “consensus talks”, he warned. He also defended the party’s demand for proportionate representation (PR) voting system for electing the upper house of the parliament. The system exists in around 90 countries, irrespective of their economic status, he claimed. This article was originally published on Daily Sun. [Bangla Press is a global platform for free thought.
