BNP leaders smell a rat in movement by Islamist parties for PR system
Bangla Press Desk:  BNP leaders have voiced concern about the announcement of a movement by some Islamist political parties demanding that the next parliamentary election be held under the proportional representation (PR) system, describing it as a potential plot to disrupt the democratic process and the upcoming polls. Speaking at different programmes on Monday, they said instead of taking the mandate of the people by contesting the election, launching the movement is part of the blueprint, which will not bring any benefit but affect the country badly. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) and Khelafat Majlish have announced separate programmes to press home their different demands, including holding the next national election using the PR system. Hinting at the movement of the Islamist parties for the PR system polls, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said doing anything in the state without acquiring people’s mandate will disrupt the country’s democracy.
“No democratic process can be successful without the participation and support of the people. Every political party must take the mandate from the people,” he said. The BNP leader came up with the statement while speaking at a training programme organised by Bangladesh Pratibandhi Kalyan Samity at its office in the city’s Uttara area. “Each party will have different thoughts, philosophy, ideas and concerns about the future. The only way to address those is to go to the polls. Changes can be made with the mandate of the people. Anything beyond that will hinder democracy,” he added. Khasru said the street movement phase is over, and now it is time to return the country’s ownership to the people.
“Every political party must seek its mandate from the people. Without public support, any attempt to act will undermine democracy.” The BNP leader further said if division is to arise among citizens, the constitution would be disrespected. He said their party believes in building an inclusive Bangladesh where no one is left behind because of religion, caste or individual identity or physical limitation. “We want a Bangladesh for all. There is no room for division based on religion, caste or personal differences. We want Bangladeshi nationalism to be seen as inclusive, not divisive,” he said.
The BNP Standing Committee member said every citizen must be engaged, empowered and skilled to that they contribute to national production. “Through empowerment and skill-building, citizens generate production. From that production comes wealth, and when wealth grows, everyone benefits,” he added. Khasru said their party wants to move away from the politics of donation and charity by pursuing policies of empowerment. AL ghosts are conspiring to foil Feb polls: Farroque BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Zainul Abedin Farroque said the cohorts of Awami League are now hatching a conspiracy to foil the upcoming national election slated for February next year.
He made the allegation while addressing a protest rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital. Farroque said the previous government, led by Sheikh Hasina, destroyed the country’s independence and democracy and distorted the history of the Liberation War, while the country’s people were not allowed to speak. He further said the Awami League and Hindustan are now companions on the same path. “Therefore, all patriotic forces must unite and stand against the Indian conspiracy.” PR a master plan to create confusion among people: Rizvi Speaking at a programme at Jamia Madania Madrasah in Baridhara of the capital, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the new movement demanding election in the PR system is a part of the blueprint to foil the upcoming national election. “An Islamist party has announced a movement for PR. This is a well-planned master plan that will not benefit anyone. The politics of engagement with defeated forces will not benefit anyone. Rather, it can create a terrible situation,” he said. Referring to the 2013 ‘Shapla Chattar’ incident, Rizvi further said, “Sheikh Hasina made fun of the blood of Hefazat leaders and activists during the Shapla Chattar massacre. Muslims cannot be suppressed through propaganda and genocide.”   This article was originally published on Daily Sun. [Bangla Press is a global platform for free thought.
