BNP leaders urge interim government to follow caretaker model

Bangla Press Desk:   BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury welcomed the court’s verdict restoring the election-time caretaker government system, calling it the result of the party’s long struggle and sacrifices.

He urged the current interim government to run the state strictly in the caretaker model until the elections, avoiding major decisions and ensuring full neutrality.

Speaking at a discussion organised by Bangladesh Crime Reporters’ Unity and Bangladesh Private University Teachers’ Council at the National Press Club, Amir Khasru said, “Today’s verdict restores justice. We have fought and sacrificed for this. The caretaker system must start from the next election. The people demand neutrality, and the interim government must uphold it.”

He criticised efforts to disrupt or delay the elections, saying, “Propaganda against BNP is being spread, but we respond only through democratic and political means. This is the path for the future of Bangladesh’s politics.”

BNP Senior Joint Secretary Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi described the verdict as a decisive step against authoritarianism.

Speaking at a medical aid event in Khilpara, Dhaka, under the patronage of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Rizvi said, “Sheikh Hasina abolished the caretaker system to cling to power. Its restoration blocks the path to fascism and revives democracy. This ruling is extremely positive.”

He added that BNP would expand humanitarian initiatives under Tarique Rahman’s leadership if it returned to power.

Other attendees included BNP Joint Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Treasurer Rashiduzzaman Millat, journalist Atikur Rahman Rumon, and agriculturist Moksedul Momin Mithun.
