DU VP candidate accuses Shibir of links to student who threatened gang rape
Bangla Press Desk: Abdul Kader, vice-president candidate from the “Students Against Discrimination” panel in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, has alleged that Alim Hossain, who threatened to gang-rape a female student petitioner, is involved with Islami Chhatra Shibir. He demanded the highest punishment for the accused student. At a press conference in front of Madhur Canteen on Tuesday afternoon, Kader said, “We do not understand how someone can remain a student after making such remarks. We demand his maximum punishment.” He alleged that Chhatra Shibir has continued with underground politics since 5 August and has yet to announce its committees. Alim Hossain’s social media profile shows evidence of his links to the organisation, he said. However, Shibir leaders denied any connection with Alim.
SM Farhad, president of Shibir’s Dhaka University unit and GS candidate in DUCSU polls, told reporters, “The claim that he [Alim] is a Shibir leader is false propaganda. We have already filed a written complaint with the proctor’s office, demanding immediate action against him.” The controversy arose after a female candidate from the “Aparajeyo 71, Adommo 24” panel filed a High Court petition on Sunday challenging Farhad’s candidacy. The High Court initially stayed the DUCSU election, but the chamber court later overturned the order. Following the petition, Alim Hossain, a fourth-year sociology student and resident of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, posted on Facebook that the petitioner deserved a “march for gang rape instead of protests against the High Court.” Ashrefa Khatun, AGS candidate from Abdul Kader’s panel, condemned the threat. She said at the press conference, “Since 5 August, we have seen that women are facing harassment on social media. We hoped for a tolerant campus for women after Hasina’s fall, but instead, they face harassment and social obstacles.”
She called on all student groups to “resist women politically, not sexually.”  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
