Fake immigration lawyer exposed and arrested in U.S
Fake immigration lawyer Diana Maribel Flores Ruiz
Minara Helen: A 58-year-old woman is facing charges of representing herself as an attorney after authorities said she posed as an immigration lawyer and collected thousands of dollars from unsuspecting clients. Diana Maribel Flores Ruiz was taken into custody on June 3 when law enforcement served an outstanding arrest warrant as she attempted to cross into the United States via the Gateway to the Americas International Bridge. The investigation into Flores Ruiz began on January 14, when a 32-year-old man contacted police to report that he had hired her to help him secure legal status in the U.S. According to the complainant, he paid Flores Ruiz a total of $3,500 over the course of several months, believing she was a licensed immigration lawyer.
During this time, Flores Ruiz reportedly filled out official documents on his behalf for submission to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and was slated to help him apply for asylum. Police reports indicate the man preserved a voice message from Flores Ruiz in which she allegedly told him she would prepare him for an upcoming interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. However, communication eventually broke down when Flores Ruiz stopped responding to his messages entirely, forcing the man to hire a legitimate immigration lawyer to take over his case. The victim discovered he was not alone when he came across a social media post detailing a previous arrest of Flores Ruiz on January 13, which also involved allegations of her posing as an attorney.
A subsequent police investigation revealed that Flores Ruiz had been filing immigration documents and taking financial compensation for legal services while holding a credential as a Texas Notary Public, rather than a license to practice law.
These findings provided investigators with the necessary evidence to secure an arrest warrant, which was executed at the international bridge.
