Final decision after Nur’s return
Bangla Press Desk: The decision of merging the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the Gono Odhikar Parishad would be finalised after Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur’s return following treatment. According to insiders, both youth-led political parties, formed around the quota reform movement, are initially positive about the merger. However, both party leaders want to retain their party names after the merger. The core discussions may begin after the return of Nur, who is receiving treatment for injuries received during a mob attack last month. Both parties may be abolished, and a separate party may be formed to bring both parties under a single umbrella, they said, adding that the two parties have a long history of acting together on the streets, including during the quota reform movement in 2018, the DUCSU election in 2019, and the anti-arrival movement of Indian Prime Minister Modi in 2021. The merger discussion came into light after Gono Odhikar Parishad’s General Secretary Md Rashed Khan shared the idea on his Facebook post. In his post, he said that the discussion of uniting the youth was progressing positively.
Meanwhile, NCP’s Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar told the Daily Sun, “It cannot be denied that discussions are ongoing, but not in the way the media presents it.” He said, “A discussion is underway with the top leaders of the Gono Odhikar Parishad on how the party can be accommodated in the NCP. They are a registered party. We are getting our registration too. They have been interested in joining us since the very beginning.” He then said the discussion might be a breakthrough after Nur returned recovering. “Nur's words are more important than those with whom we discuss now.” Meanwhile, Shakil Uzzaman Shakil, higher council member and office secretary of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, told the Daily Sun, “The merger could dissolve one party into another or the creation of an entirely new party name and structure.”
He said, “If the youth join hands, the people will have a strong platform to gain trust. Many NCP leaders were once with the Gono Odhikar Parishad and its affiliated organisations. Discussions have been ongoing for a long time to build a new Bangladesh by uniting the youth.” Shakil also said that there was no alternative to the unity of the key stakeholders of the July uprising for the larger interest of the country. Those leaders echoing each other said that the process of merging the two parties would not be simple if the NCP received registration. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
