‘Hold election immediately to restore democracy’
Bangla Press Desk: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday called for holding a parliamentary election without delay to restore democracy in the country. “We must urgently return to the democratic process. People’s representatives must be elected to Parliament and reforms must come through democratic means,” he said at a book launch at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka. The book, Economy, Governance and Power: A Portrait of Everyday Life, was authored by economist and former caretaker government adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman. Fakhrul said that genuine reforms are not possible without a democratically elected government.
“Reforms cannot be imposed forcefully. Democratic practices must not be delayed in their name,” he said. Citing worsening corruption, he claimed that good governance is absent. “A businessman who once paid Tk1 lakh in bribes now pays Tk5 lakh. Nothing has changed, not even the police,” he said. He warned of potential economic setbacks due to global shifts, such as US tariffs under President Donald Trump, urging all political parties to act in the public interest.
At a separate event organised by Zia Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club, Fakhrul dismissed the idea of a proportional representation (PR) electoral system, calling it unsuitable for Bangladesh. “Ordinary people want to vote for a local leader who will represent them. The PR system will only add confusion,” he said. Criticising the current bureaucratic structure, he said, “It is a major obstacle to development. To transform negative bureaucracy into a positive force, political parties must engage with the people and understand their needs.” Fakhrul said Bangladesh is now at a crossroads. “We are in a transitional period, seeking a path to democracy. The political and economic damage done by the Awami League will take time to repair. They have destroyed institutions – from the judiciary and administration to universities and political parties,” he alleged. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
