Jamaat, NCP, Islami Andolan slam EC over election roadmap
Bangla Press Desk:  Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party (NCP), and Islami Andolan Bangladesh have heavily criticized the Election Commission after the announcement of the election roadmap on Thursday. Mentioning that the nation expects a free and fair election in February next year, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said, “The roadmap announced by the Election Commission is conventional and somewhat misleading. The method by which the election will be held has not yet been decided.” He then said, “The process of providing the legal basis for the July National Charter and its implementation has not been finalised either. In this situation, this roadmap announcement is immature and partial. It does not reflect the mass people’s expectations.” Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said they had no problem with the election roadmap announced by the Election Commission but reform, trial and PR (proportional representation) system must be implemented before the election.
“The Chief Adviser announced the election roadmap without giving a visible form of reform and trial. The election can be held on the roadmap. Jamaat has no objection to this. However, before the election, the July Charter must be implemented with the legal basis, trial of massacre must be made visible,” he said. The Jamaat leader came up with the statement while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organised by the party’s Dhaka South city unit at the Abdus Salam Hall of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Thursday afternoon. He said if the interim government could not provide the legal basis for the July Charter and introduce PR system in the political agreement, then a referendum must be held. “Those who claim not to understand PR do not have the knowledge to run the state. In fact, they understand the PR system but do not want to accept it,” he added.
Drawing attention of the bureaucrats, he said some bureaucrats assumed that a particular party would come to power in the next election. “That is why some bureaucrats are seen leaning before the election.” To discuss the current political situation, Jamaat leaders held a meeting on Thursday afternoon with Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA), National Democratic Party (NDP) and Bangladesh Jana Jote Party (BJP). Jamaat leaders Syed Abdullah Md. Taher, Shamsul Islam, Hamidur Rahman Azad, Abdul Halim and Ed. Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair were present at the meeting. Meanwhile, talking to the Daily Sun, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Spokesperson Gazi Ataur Rahman said the government must give a roadmap for the implementation of the July Charter before announcing the election roadmap.
“Without giving any roadmap on that, announcing an election roadmap for holding the polls in old system is nothing but a denial of the July mass uprising,” he said. Mentioning that they were not sure whether the election would be held in the PR system, Ataur said, “Before a settlement of this, the Election Commission has no moral right to announce such an action plan.” Echoing Jamaat and Islami Andolan, the National Citizen Party (NCP) said the interim government broke its promises by announcing election roadmap before the implementation of the July Charter. NCP Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb made the remark while addressing a press conference at the party’s temporary office in the capital’s Banglamotor on Thursday evening. “Announcing the roadmap before declaring the implementation of the July Charter is tantamount to breaking promises. The preparation for the election is linked to the way the charter will be implemented,” he said, adding that this misstep could create future crises for which the government must bear responsibility.  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
