Jamaat to go for movement for PR system, if necessary
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will go for a movement, if necessary, to realise its demand for the proportional representation (PR) system in both houses of parliament. He also said the law and order situation has not yet reached acceptable level, highlighting the potential challenges during the February elections. “Jamaat will continue to demand the implementation of the PR system in both houses, and if necessary, we’ll launch a movement,” its Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said on Sunday. While talking to reporters at the EC building after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, he said the PR system is essential for free and fair elections. “It may be new for Bangladesh, but it is not new to the world. It will ensure the proper value of people's voting rights," he added.
The Jamaat leader said their party has no objection if the next general election is held in February next year. “We have no objection to the announced timeframe for the election in February. We have been informed that the election will be held in the first half of February, and Jamaat-e-Islami welcomes this." Taher said an acceptable, free, and participatory election is the demand of the people. "Looking at the past elections, people have doubts about whether the next one will be transparent. Trust must be restored among the public," he said. "The government must prove its sincerity in judicial matters. The points on which the country's political parties and the commission have agreed can, for now, be considered as benchmarks for reform. Implementation is essential," he said. Regarding the law-and-order situation, the Jamaat leader said, "There are limitations in law enforcement. The CEC is working on this. Jamaat believes that the law-and-order situation is not yet ready for the election."
However, the EC chief has promised to ensure law and order during elections even at the "cost of his very life," Taher said. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
