Joy marks three decades in acting
Bangla Press Desk: Shariar Nazim Joy has completed three decades in acting, having begun his television career in 1997 after starting out in theatre. He soon emerged as a prominent face in TV dramas and established himself firmly on the small screen within a few years.
At the peak of his television career, more than 20 dramas featuring Joy were aired in a single Eid season. In 1998, he became the first Bangladeshi actor to play the lead role in a drama shot outside the country, filmed in London. He later expanded his work to cinema and, in recent years, has drawn wide attention through his performances on OTT platforms.
Alongside acting, Joy has directed both dramas and films and has also enjoyed notable success as a television presenter. His involvement across multiple media has led many to describe him as an all-rounder in Bangladesh’s entertainment industry.
Reflecting on his journey, Joy said his acting career spans 30 years, beginning with theatre before moving to television. He noted that he continues to receive leading roles and that audiences have appreciated his performances in OTT projects such as 7 Number Floor, 840, Jimmi, Guti and Paapkahini. He confirmed that he is set to work on Paapkahini Season 2. Joy also said his years as a presenter contributed significantly to his popularity, adding that presentation, for him, was another form of acting.
Among his most popular television dramas are Khorer Putul, Mukhosh, Bileti Bilash, Lal Ghuri, Pata Jhore Brikkho More Na, Protidin Ekti Golap, Jodi-o Sondhya, Somudro Bilash and Biyer Angti. He has worked with many leading creators, including Ferdous Hasan, Sohel Arman, Arun Chowdhury, Selim Al Deen, Gazi Mazharul Anwar, Chayanika Chowdhury and Aronno Anwar. Over the years, he has acted in more than 1,000 dramas. His films Gram Gonj-er Piriti and Jiboner Golpo further widened his audience base. As a director, his film Prarthona won two National Awards, while Arpita and Priyokomola are also among his directed works.
Speaking about his achievements, Joy said that in 30 years, his on-screen presence has never irritated viewers and that he has largely avoided criticism as an actor. He described the audience’s continued appreciation as the greatest achievement of his career.
On his future plans, Joy said his main challenge is staying relevant with time as OTT content gains popularity and reaches a new generation of viewers. He emphasised the importance of serious preparation for every role and remaining updated with changing trends. Acknowledging that mistakes are inevitable, he said patience and wisdom can turn difficult times into strength. Expressing confidence in his journey ahead, he said faith, experience and audience support have given him renewed determination to move forward.
