Khaleda Zia cleared in 3 Cumilla cases
Bangla Press Desk: BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been acquitted in three Cumilla cases, including a murder charge related to the 2015 petrol bomb attack and fire in a covered van on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Chauddagram. Confirming the matter, Cumilla Public Prosecutor (PP) Md Kaimul Haque Rinku said the cases were withdrawn as law ministry officials deemed these politically motivated. On 3 February 2015, eight people were killed and at least 20 injured when miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a bus in Jogmohanpur of Chauddagram during the BNP-led alliance’s movement. Following the incident, police filed two cases against Khaleda Zia and several others—one under the Explosive Substances Act and the other for murder.
Separately, 32 people, including Khaleda Zia, were accused under the Special Powers Act, 1974, for damaging and torching a covered van during the 25 January 2015 hartal in Chauddagram, Cumilla. The Cumilla PP said an application was submitted to the Law Ministry to withdraw the three cases, as they were considered politically motivated lawsuits filed during the previous Awami League government. The ministry has accepted the application and ordered the withdrawal of the three cases, he said. From now on, there are no cases against Khaleda Zia and BNP central leaders with Chauddagram Police Station, he added. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
