My journey is not over, I will fulfill my manifesto commitments: Abidul
Bangla Press Desk: Vice-president candidate of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election Abidul Islam Khan has vowed to continue his political journey despite losing the polls. He said he would work to realise the commitments made in his election manifesto and believes that a new chapter in student politics will begin through their leadership. In a verified Facebook post on Wednesday afternoon, Abidul wrote, “My journey does not end here. Along with my own limitations, it will be in our hands to bring about a fresh start in student politics.” On Tuesday, Abidul lost to Islami Chhatra Shibir candidate Md Abu Sadiq Kayem in the DUCSU VP race.
Abidul secured 5,708 votes, while Kayem won with 14,042 votes. In a post on election night, Abidul rejected the results, calling the polls “rigged” and a “mockery.” Reflecting on his campaign, Abidul wrote, “Never in my life did I think I would come this far. On the night before the election, Khalequddin bhai asked me where I see myself in five years. I couldn’t answer. I never really knew where I was supposed to see myself. One movement after another came, and I gave myself to the streets. That path has brought me this far today. It’s okay.” He alleged irregularities during voting, saying, “From noon I kept identifying problems at different polling centres and spoke about them all day. I still hope the administration will properly investigate these allegations and take appropriate action.”
Expressing gratitude to the students of Dhaka University, he said, “I thank all my brothers and sisters who came to cast their votes. With only a 20-day campaign, I tried to reach out to every student. I may not have touched everyone, but I assure you, my journey is far from over.” Reaffirming his commitment as a Chhatra Dal leader, Abidul added, “I promise that whatever I pledged in my manifesto, I will fight to achieve it from the administration. The new beginning of student politics at Dhaka University will be in our hands. We will stand as vigilant sentinels on the streets and bring positive changes to student politics across Bangladesh. Insha’Allah, you will see the reflection of this in the next DUCSU election. Abid will never leave you.” He concluded his post with a quote from civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
