Reza Kibria joins BNP, citing confidence in Tarique Rahman’s leadership

Bangla Press Desk:    Economist Reza Kibria, founder and convener of the political platform Gono Odhikar Parishad, has formally joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

He made the announcement on Monday at the political office of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Gulshan, in the presence of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed.

Reflecting on his decision, Kibria said he had left a “lucrative job” at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to serve the nation through politics. “The way Tarique Rahman is leading the party convinced me that BNP is the best platform for anyone who genuinely wants to work for the country,” he said.

He added that he would devote his full efforts to any responsibility entrusted to him by the party.

Welcoming Kibria, Fakhrul said the country urgently needs talented individuals to engage in politics. “When knowledgeable and capable people enter politics, the nation becomes more prosperous,” he noted.

Responding to a question about whether more prominent figures are set to join BNP, Fakhrul remarked, “There is now a rush to join the BNP. Everyone realises that BNP is poised to shape the country’s future.”

He said the party is preparing in full swing for the upcoming election in February, adding that a conducive environment for a fair and inclusive poll currently exists.

Speaking about the health condition of Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul said, “Her condition remains unchanged. She is under close medical supervision in line with the advice of both local and foreign physicians.”

He urged the public to pray for her recovery.
