Tarique to become BNP chairman within days: Fakhrul

Bangla Press Desk: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday announced that party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman will assume the position of chairman within a couple of days, as the post was left vacant following the demise of his mother, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

While talking to reporters at a hotel in Sylhet, Fakhrul also said that BNP will begin its election campaign from Sylhet, expressing confidence in the upcoming national polls as a step toward fulfilling the democratic aspirations envisioned by Begum Khaleda Zia.

“Tarique Rahman is set to become the chairman of BNP in the coming days, filling the vacancy left by of late chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia,” he said.

Claiming that the people have long been denied their voting rights, he said the upcoming national election is crucial for the nation and that the BNP has been advocating for it for an extended period.

The election process is in progress and the Election Commission is working in cooperation with all stakeholders smoothly, he said.

It was the dream of Begum Khaleda Zia to rebuild a democratic Bangladesh, he said, adding his party wants to achieve the goal the late party chief desired.

“We have got a chance and we must utilise the opportunity to rebuild a democratic Bangladesh,” said the BNP leader.

Regarding the persistent mob violence, Fakhrul said that mobocracy destroys democracy and it must be eliminated.

Earlier in the day, Fakhrul arrived in Sylhet by air and after Asr prayers, he visited the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hazrat Shah Paran (RA).

At this time, he prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls of late BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and late president Ziaur Rahman.
