Today is Jail Killing Day.
BanglaPress Desk: On November 3, 1975, four key organizers of the Liberation War—Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, M. Mansur Ali, and A.H.M. Kamaruzzaman—were brutally murdered while in prison. Such an incident, involving the entry into a prison in the dead of night to carry out killings, is rare in history.
Following the events of August 15, 1975, these four national leaders were arrested and detained at the Dhaka Central Jail. On the night of November 3, they were shot to death inside the prison. Subsequently, on November 4, 1975, Kazi Abdul Awal, the then-Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, filed a murder case at the Lalbagh Police Station.
After the case was filed, an 'Indemnity Ordinance' was issued, which halted the investigation and judicial proceedings.
The investigation was resumed in 1996 and concluded in 1998, paving the way for the trial process. On October 20, 2004, the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court delivered its verdict, sentencing three individuals to death and twelve others to life imprisonment.
