An LNG terminal will remain closed for four days, leading to a reduction in gas supply across the country.
Bangla Press Desk: Gas supply will remain suspended for four consecutive days starting from November 4 due to emergency maintenance work at Summit’s floating LNG terminal, located in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar. The Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) has expressed concern that this could lead to a severe drop in gas pressure across the country.
In a press release issued on Sunday (November 1), Petrobangla announced that gas supply from Summit’s floating LNG terminal will be completely halted from 8:00 AM on November 4 until 4:00 PM on November 7.
According to Petrobangla, the country’s two floating LNG terminals have a combined daily supply capacity of 1.05 billion cubic feet (bcf). Typically, about 0.92 bcf of gas is supplied to the national grid daily. With the Summit terminal out of operation, the daily LNG supply is expected to drop to approximately 0.60 bcf.
Meanwhile, the daily demand for gas in the country stands at about 3.80 bcf. Domestic gas fields produce approximately 1.60 bcf, with the remaining demand met through imported LNG.
The reduction in gas supply due to the maintenance work could exacerbate shortages in power generation, industrial operations, and the residential sector. Petrobangla has apologized to consumers for this temporary inconvenience.
Notably, similar maintenance work was previously carried out at this same floating LNG terminal in December of last year.
