Death Threats Sent to Sourav Ganguly and Wife Dona, Police Investigate

Bangla Press Desk:  Indian cricket legend Sourav Ganguly has reportedly received several threatening letters over the past few months, including a recent letter threatening to kill him and his wife, Dona Ganguly, prompting Kolkata Police to launch an investigation.

According to the complaint filed by the Ganguly family and the former India captain’s personal assistant, the latest letter was opened on Monday at the office of the Bengal cricket president. Written entirely in English, the letter allegedly contained explicit threats to “eliminate” or “finish” Ganguly and his family.A formal written complaint has been lodged with Kolkata Police on behalf of Ganguly’s office over the threatening letters allegedly sent to the former cricketer, his wife and members of their staff.

“We are taking the complaint seriously and have begun an investigation. We are examining the letters, their source and the courier trail to identify the person responsible,” a police officer said.

Family sources said similar letters had been arriving for nearly six months. They were initially dismissed as messages from overenthusiastic fans. However, the repeated threats and increasingly aggressive language in the latest letter prompted the family to approach the police.

The complaint has been lodged at Thakurpukur Police Station, while the state government’s security department has also been alerted and asked to take immediate measures.

Former Indian cricket team captain and ex-BCCI President Ganguly currently has Y-category security. His security cover was reportedly downgraded from Z-category to Y-category following a reassessment of his security arrangements and threat perception.

The latest incident has also prompted calls from his fans and supporters for a review of his security cover.
