Dr. Yunus faces a barrage of questions at New York airport.
Bangla Press Desk: Expatriates in New York expressed their outrage towards Dr. Muhammad Yunus—the former Chief Adviser of the interim government—by accusing him of being a "terrorist" and alleging that he was responsible for the deaths of thousands of children and police officers.
The incident took place on Monday (October 12) at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York, USA.
He had arrived at the airport from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight prior to the confrontation.
At the scene, some individuals questioned his reasons for visiting the United States, raising allegations regarding arrests, the killing of police personnel, and the destruction of democracy in Bangladesh.
In a video circulating on social media, a man is heard repeatedly asking Dr. Yunus why he had come to the United States. Addressing him directly, the man said, "You are a terrorist."
"You have killed people in Bangladesh. Why have you come here? Tell us, why have you come?"
At one point, the man alleged that 200,000 people had been arrested and thousands of police officers killed in Bangladesh. He was heard saying, "You killed thousands of police officers in my country. Why have you come here? Why have you come here?" Accusations that Dr. Yunus had destroyed democracy in Bangladesh were also raised during the encounter.
In the video, the man is heard saying, "He destroyed the democracy of my country. Why has he come here?"
However, the identities of the expatriates involved and the full details of the incident could not be confirmed. No statement has been issued by Dr. Yunus regarding this matter.
Dr. Yunus assumed office as the head of the interim government on August 8, 2024, following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina administration amidst a mass uprising. Since then, chaotic conditions—including mob violence—have emerged across the country.
During his tenure, over a thousand children have died in recent months due to a "flawed decision" regarding the measles vaccine. Health experts have held Dr. Yunus and other concerned officials responsible for this.
