Metal detectors and luggage scanners are being installed at the metro station.
Bangla Press Desk: The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has decided to install modern security equipment—similar to that used at airports—at the capital’s metro rail stations to bolster security and ensure passenger safety.
DMTCL Director Md. Nazrul Islam shared this information with the Bangladeshi media on Sunday.
He explained that under the new system, passengers will pass through archway metal detectors to identify any metallic objects on their person, while their bags and belongings will be screened using luggage scanners before they enter the stations.
To this end, the DMTCL issued an online tender on October 19 for the procurement of the necessary security equipment. The tender was initiated by Mohammad Asaduzzaman, General Manager of the company’s Store and Procurement Department.
Interested and qualified firms have been instructed to submit their bids via the national e-Government Procurement (e-GP) portal. Detailed information and guidelines regarding the process are available on the e-GP portal.
Once the new security measures are implemented, it will be possible to scan the bags and other belongings that passengers carry with them when entering metro rail stations.
Additionally, archway metal detectors will be used to identify any metallic objects carried on a person. The authorities expect that these measures will enhance security screening capabilities and help prevent untoward incidents.
However, a specific timeline—including the number of security devices to be purchased, which stations will receive them in the first phase, and when regular passenger screening will commence—has not yet been announced.
Meanwhile, the same tender notice also includes a provision for an annual maintenance contract for the electrical systems installed at the MRT Line-6 depot.
This contract covers the maintenance of low-voltage (LV) systems, diesel generator sets, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units, ventilation systems, and other general electrical infrastructure. According to the tender notice, the time for purchasing tender documents has been set for November 11, between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
