November 7, 1975, is the date that determined Bangladesh’s path: Prime Minister
Bangla Press Desk: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman considers the historic 7th of November, 1975, to be a defining moment that charted the course for Bangladesh. He stated, "May the revolutionary spirit of November 7th serve as the inspiration and guiding force for building the future of Bangladesh."
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman made these remarks in a message issued on the occasion of the "Historic National Revolution and Solidarity Day." The government has organized a series of programs to mark the day, and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has also announced its own set of commemorative activities.
The President has called for unity, inspired by the spirit of November 7th, to build a democratic Bangladesh.
In his message, the Prime Minister noted, "On this day—November 7, 1975—the soldiers and the people of the country stood united to thwart all conspiracies directed against the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh."
"In the nation's history, the historic 7th of November served as a day to distinguish between the friends and foes of Bangladesh." The Prime Minister remarked that while dwelling solely on the past is not advisable, failing to learn from history when charting the path for the future is a grave historical error.
He stated, "I believe that the historic 7th of November, 1975, was the day that determined the trajectory of Bangladesh. Those who sought to reduce Bangladesh to a subservient state, those who stripped the people of their democratic political rights to establish a one-party autocratic regime, and those who aimed to trample upon the honor of the military—a symbol of the nation's valor, courage, and dignity—were defeated on this day, November 7, 1975, through the historic revolution of patriotic soldiers and the common people."
History bears witness that, following a long-standing conspiracy, the very forces defeated on November 7, 1975, later regrouped under the banner of a 'Grand Alliance' (Mahajot) and succeeded in turning the country into a subservient state. They undermined the honor and prestige of the military by orchestrating the massacre of army officers at the BDR Pilkhana headquarters, and they established a fascist regime by stripping the people of their right to vote and their democratic political rights. In a statement, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman noted that the country has finally been liberated from fascism after more than a decade and a half—a feat achieved through the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs and a bloody mass uprising led by courageous students and the general public.
The Prime Minister stated, "The war of 1971 was fought to attain independence, while the struggle in 2024 was to safeguard the freedom of the nation and its people."
"Just as people from all walks of life took to the streets in 2024 to defend the nation’s and the people’s freedom, the soldiers and the public—united—had similarly taken to the streets in 1975 to thwart all conspiracies aimed against the country’s independence and sovereignty."
He added, "Let our primary pledge this November 7th be to ensure that no one can ever again usurp the rights of the nation and its people, or reduce our country to a subservient state. Achieving this pledge requires national unity."
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized that, given the socio-economic, geographical, and political realities of Bangladesh, upholding national unity necessitates embracing the spirit of the 'soldiers-and-people' revolution of November 7th. He remarked, "Whether it was the 1971 War of Independence, the 1975 revolution by soldiers and the public against subservient, hostile forces, the 1990 movement against autocracy, or the 2024 mass uprising against fascism—every such revolution or uprising throughout our history has shared a single aspiration: to build a self-reliant, secure, and welfare-oriented state in an independent Bangladesh, where all citizens enjoy democratic political rights."
He urged that on this historic day, the patriotic, pro-democracy people should firmly declare: "Not Delhi, not Pindi (Rawalpindi), nor any other nation—Bangladesh comes first."
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman wished for the success of all programs organized to mark November 7th nationwide. He concluded, "May the revolutionary spirit of November 7th serve as the inspiration and guiding force for building the future of Bangladesh."
