Mosque vandalized in New York, Quran torn and feces smeared on door

Smeared feces on the door of a historic Brooklyn mosque

Abu Sabet: A hate-filled vandal smeared feces on the door of a historic Brooklyn mosque and threw torn pages of the Quran, cops said Saturday.

The entrance to the Islamic Mission of America Daoud Mosque at State and Clinton Sts. in Brooklyn Heights was targeted about 4:30 a.m. March 9, with torn up pages of the Quran left on the front step.

The vandal briefly left, only to return to smear fecal matter on the door before running off east on State St., police sources said. No one has been arrested. The NYPD released surveillance footage of the suspect and is asking the public’s help identifying him and tracking him down. In a statement Sunday, the New York chapter of the Council for American Islamic Relations condemned the crime.

“This reported act of attempted desecration is deeply disturbing and reflects a blatant act of hate targeting a house of worship,” said CAIR-NY’s executive director, Afaf Nasher. “We commend law enforcement authorities for investigating this incident as a hate crime and urge a swift and thorough investigation to hold the perpetrator accountable.”

Based in a converted townhouse, the house of worship was founded around 100 years ago to serve Sunni Muslims, says its web site, which describes the Islamic Mission of America as “one of the most influential American Islamic organizations to have ever existed.”

The suspect wore a black skullcap, black face mask hanging down below his chin, red sweatshirt, red sweatpants and white-and-black sneakers. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
