Coach Furious Over Hamza’s Red Card, Criticises Referee’s Decision
Bangla Press Desk: Sheffield United suffered a late 3-2 defeat to Portsmouth after Ibou Adams scored in the 89th minute, but the loss was not the team’s only source of frustration. Sheffield manager Chris Wilder openly criticised the referee’s decision to send off Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Chowdhury.
Hamza received his first yellow card in the 33rd minute before being shown a second yellow in the 44th minute for a foul on Portsmouth winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen. The dismissal forced the Bangladeshi midfielder to leave the pitch.
Wilder questioned the second booking, arguing that Hamza had little room to move out of the way when the incident occurred. He also claimed that similar situations had happened elsewhere during the match.
Expressing his frustration with referee Oliver Langford, the Sheffield manager said he could not understand where Hamza was supposed to move in that situation. He also complained that Sheffield players had repeatedly faced obstruction during the game.
Wilder further alleged that the referee failed to make the appropriate decision when one of his players was pulled inside the penalty area late in the match.
The Sheffield boss maintained that Hamza did not deserve a red card. He also suggested that Portsmouth players crowding around the referee was part of the tactical gamesmanship often seen in football. Overall, he felt his team had been treated unfairly.
Portsmouth had already taken the lead before Hamza’s dismissal. Jack Swanson put the visitors ahead in the 41st minute, while Adrian Segecic doubled their advantage in the 54th minute against a Sheffield side reduced to 10 men.
However, Sheffield refused to give up. Japhet Tanganga pulled one back in the 59th minute before Thomas Cannon equalised in the 67th minute, completing an impressive comeback from two goals down.
Despite fighting back with 10 players, Sheffield could not secure a point. Adams’ 89th-minute strike ended their hopes and sealed a 3-2 victory for Portsmouth, leaving Hamza’s controversial red card as one of the match’s major talking points.
