India defeated New Zealand with ease.
BanglaPress Desk: New Zealand was bundled out for a low total, thanks to a brilliant bowling performance by Arshdeep Singh. Virat Kohli then took charge with the bat, paving the way for an easy Indian victory. In the first ODI of the series in Auckland—a match affected by rain—India secured a 5-wicket win via the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Sent in to bat first after losing the toss at Eden Park, New Zealand was bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs. Due to rain, a revised target of 143 runs in 32 overs was set for India. The visitors reached the target in just 22.4 overs, with 5 wickets and 56 balls to spare.
India faced an early setback in their chase, as captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck in the very first over. However, Kohli, partnering with Shubman Gill for the second wicket, took control of the match. Their 113-run partnership off 104 balls steered India toward victory. This marked the sixth time the pair has shared a century partnership in ODIs. Gill was eventually dismissed after scoring 37 runs off 56 balls.
At the other end, Kohli continued to bat aggressively, reaching his half-century in just 35 balls. This was the 80th fifty of his ODI career and his second-fastest half-century in overseas conditions—his fastest being a 34-ball fifty against Australia in 2016.
Before being dismissed by Jacob Duffy, Kohli played a magnificent innings of 74 runs off 51 balls, featuring 13 fours and a six. The Indian star also set two other notable records in this match: he equaled Ricky Ponting’s tally for the most runs scored against New Zealand in ODIs, with both players now standing at 1,971 runs.
Furthermore, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar for the most runs scored while chasing in ODIs on foreign soil, having now accumulated 8,741 runs at an average of 66.21. On the other hand, Sachin has accumulated 8,720 runs at an average of 42.33. After Kohli’s dismissal, Shreyas Iyer was out for 15 runs, but India faced no real difficulty in securing the win.
Earlier, while batting, New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals against the disciplined bowling attack of the Indians. Tim Seifert was the top scorer for the team with 38 runs, while Blair Tickner contributed 34, Glenn Phillips 30, and Daryl Mitchell 28.
Arshdeep Singh was the most successful bowler for India, taking four wickets for 70 runs in his 10 overs. Guranoor Brar claimed three wickets, and Anshul Kamboj picked up two.
With this victory, India has taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series. The two teams will face each other again in the second match of the series on Saturday (November 7) in Wellington.
